The Walking Theatre Company

Mission Statement

The Walking Theatre Company creates for all residents in rural communities the opportunity to actively experience high quality professional ‘interactive walking theatre’ that is set within and inspired by Scotland’s diverse landscapes, changing natural environment and rich cultural heritage. We take theatre to the people.

Aims

  • We aim to bring theatre to a wider audience with the emphasis on our rural community. Our work is devised to be accessible to all.
  • We develop existing work and profile new writing to create accessible theatre for  all.
  • We aim to support eco tourism by developing work designed to enhance and raise awareness of the natural landscape, woodland, and environmental forces.
  • We aim to raise the profile of our area for the local community and businesses by adding to local events and creating an 'attraction' to draw people to Cowal.
  • We aim to raise awareness of Cowal's rich and diverse heritage by developing new writing into performances that tale tales of our culture, people and history.
  • We strive to be an equal opportunities company, our performers and contributor's are all selected on their own merit irrespective of race gender, disability or beliefs.
  • We aim to promote 'healthy living' by enhancing the outdoor 'walking' experience.

Products

Our base product is guided walks with plays set within each walk. Each play is performed to the promenading audience who are included within the dramatic narrative. This product combines our immediate natural resources with  performance art. We also specialise in performing at public events with 'shorts' created to bring a focal point to a group 'gathering'

The Walking Theatre Company 3

Repertoire

Prospero's Walk
Shakespearian moments from the Tempest. A tale of filial duty, passion, ego and a young girl's awakening. Night versus day, heaven versus earth, and magic running riot. A bad daddy and his truculent teen.

The Forgotten Lady of Argyll
A new work based on material from the Glen Massan Manuscripts. A tale of Deidre of the Sorrows who came to Cowal with her lover and lived on its shores for seven years. Deidre's 4th-century life parallels life in 21st-century Cowal, a journey of trade, communication, religion, isolation, inclusion, exclusion, romance and betrayal.

Alice in Wonderland
Alice's woodland wonderland -  Join the white Rabbit, who is late, late, late, on a guided adventure through a woodland wonderland. Designed for primary schools this performance walk explores the themes of wildlife, habitat, planting and seed cultivation, how plants are collected and stored and where champion specimens live. Play the animal Corcus game and be part of the human croquet team, all participating beasts will win a special gift which will help should you meet the very annoyed Red Queen. Be part of an outdoor performance based upon Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, juice provided at the mad hatters tea party.

This work has been developed in line with the 5-15 expressive arts curriculum.

Fish, Fowl & Fungi
Wild food combined with a poetry walk which ends with a sensational Backwoods Lunch. In association with "Real Food's" Alison Sykora

Walking Theatre Workshops - Available on request covering all the plays in our repertoire and designed for all ages.

Untoward at Castle Toward
A tale of Lamont's, Campbell's, murder, treachery and more murder (new commission).
